Grok Bot vs. AI Chat Assistants

Checked against xAI's official docs on Oct 27, 2026

So you've used an AI chat assistant. You type a question, it types back an answer. Very handy. So what's different about a Grok Bot?

xAI answers that right on its official page (checked Oct 27, 2026): Bots have their own computer, so they can work inside your apps and tools. They also run in parallel, 24/7, even when your laptop is closed.

The big differences, in plain English

  1. It does the work, not just the talking. Because a Bot has its own computer, xAI says it uses your apps and websites the way you would, including the tools that are harder to navigate.
  2. It keeps going without you. Bots run 24/7, even with your laptop closed, and come back when your approval is needed.
  3. You can have a whole team. Create a Bot, give it a task, and add another as the work grows. xAI's example: one on a project, one on outbound, one on systems.
  4. It learns your way of doing things. Show a Bot a workflow once and it saves it as a routine. Bots also keep context and learn from each other.

So which one do you need?

Here's a simple way to think about it. If you want a quick answer, an idea, or a first draft, a chat assistant is often all you need. If you want a job handled from start to finish inside your tools, like working a support queue or doing weekly reporting (two examples xAI shows), that's where a Bot comes in.

And either way, you stay in charge. xAI says Bots come back when your approval is needed. For more on that, see our lesson on Human Oversight Basics.
