Teach a Bot a Task: How It Works

Checked against xAI's official docs on Oct 28, 2026

One of Grok Bot's handiest tricks is that you can show it a task once, and it does it on its own after that. Here's how xAI describes it, in plain English, from its official Grok Bot page and its Grok Bot 101 guide, both checked on Oct 28, 2026.

Show a Bot how it's done

In xAI's words: "Ask a Bot to follow along as you complete a workflow once. It saves it as a routine and runs it on its own next time."

xAI's Grok Bot 101 guide adds that, because a Bot has a real computer, you can teach it a workflow in two ways:

The guide's advice: be as specific as you can, and describe a workflow exactly as you would do it, or record a demo on your screen.

What a Bot's settings look like

xAI's guide says a Bot is a set of instructions, and behind the scenes its settings are three fields: a Name, a Title, and a Description. You can set them in chat or in Settings. The Description is where the workflow goes, in plain words.

How the routine runs later

xAI's guide lists three ways to talk to a Bot:

xAI's product page lists routines on a schedule as part of every plan, starting with Premium. It also says Bots keep context and learn from each other.

When the task needs you

Some steps need a person. xAI's guide says that when a flow needs you, the Bot can hand the desktop back, the way a remote computer would, so you can fill in a CAPTCHA or a two-step login. It can also send you a secure form for a password or an API key.

xAI also describes a separate review agent that checks proposed actions and can allow, block, or escalate them to you, guided by rules you write in plain language. Our security and privacy guide covers this.

Picking a good first task: our suggestions

These are our ideas, not xAI's.

  1. Choose a task you do the same way every week, like pulling a report or tidying a spreadsheet.
  2. Before you start, jot the steps and the finished result you expect.
  3. Do it at your normal pace and say each step out loud, or write the steps in plain words.
  4. Ask the Bot to show you its saved routine, and correct anything it got wrong.
  5. Check its first few runs closely, and keep your approval on anything that sends, buys, or deletes.
